ACEM Engineering Awards 2013 - Gold Award of Special Merit for St Joseph's @ Gurney Paragon
2013-06-24

Praised for demonstrating innovation, uniqueness of construction and conservation of a heritage building, St Joseph’s @ Gurney Paragon, Penang won the ACEM Engineering Gold Award of Special Merit 2013 under the Building (Structure) category.

St Joseph’s is an almost 100 year old load bearing masonry building.  The engineering challenge of St Joseph’s did not lie in the conservation or rehabilitation of the actual structure of the building.  Its superstructure was in generally good condition.

The challenge lay in creating two levels of basement parking floors under St Joseph’s.  This was achieved.  The building was underpinned and excavation was carried out underneath it followed by construction of the two-level basement beneath it.

This resulted in gaining a significant number of car parks for the mixed development project as well as freed up the architect’s for unconstrained planning of the basement floors below the entire development.

Arup provided Geotechnical, Civil and Structural services.

"To preserve the entire structure and building fabric of St Joseph's in a way that will keep its integrity so that it can be integral to the new development of Gurney Paragon."
- Tong Veng Wye, Project Director

The award was presented at the ACEM's 50th Anniversary Dinner held at Hilton KL on 22 June 2013.
